TEACHING OBJECTIVES:
-- To introduce the windblown sedimentary deposit called loess
-- To discuss the origin of loess in Alaskan river valleys
-- To introduce the notion that loess deposits along the Matanuska River contain layers deposited over the last 6500 years that record four cold, dry glacial periods alternating with warmer times between glaciations.
-- To introduce the notion that when valley glaciers melt, tons of sediment accumulates downstream
-- To study the geography of Alaska, and practice locating places with latitude and longitude.
-- To introduce the concept of particle, or grain size and the notion that loess contains little , or no, clay-sized (less than .004 mm) material** and therefore doesn’t stick together well -- and, to discuss the way this can effect foundation design of houses
-- To consider how the grain size, texture, and mineral composition of loess can effect soil for growing food
