081-Sand, Three Kinds Grades 3-8
$12.00
Mystery includes rock, fossil, or mineral sample and Mystery questions with teaching instructions.
SAMPLES:
- Black sand from beaches in Hawaii and derived from volcanic basalt that has been ground up in the surf
- Soft, white sand composed of the mineral gypsum (softness = 2 on the Mohs' Mineral Hardness Scale) from sand dunes at the White Sands National Monument
- Sand from beaches in Florida (or other place) composed entirely of small, but visible pieces of shells and other hard parts of shoreline organisms
TEACHING OBJECTIVES:
- To introduce the concept that sand is produced in nature by a variety of “tools”, such as ocean surf and wind
- To show that sand can vary in composition, and depends upon the type of rock nearby that it is made from
- To give young children a global feel for earth processes (the sands come from areas that are widely different and very far apart)
