TEACHING OBJECTIVES:
- To introduce the rock type, GNEISS--a light-colored rock with coarse bands of segregated light and dark minerals thoughout the rock. Gneisses break across the foliation (a set of flat or wavy parallel planes produced by deformation).
- To introduce the concept that metamorphic rocks are RECYCLED, that is derived from a variety of sources: For example, from various kinds of soft sediment, or from igneous rocks like granite, or from other metamorphic rocks
- To introduce the notion that over time, heat and pressure can reorganize the original minerals into bands of light and dark NEW MINERALS
