Derby News 2008

Our committee have spent many hours working on our 2008 Derby Race Schedule. Working around the raptor migration problem that plagued us in the past, by having the races later in the season, released with club birds to lessen the chances of entry losses, later in the year also gives a person an opportunity to enter late bred's from their race team. Another concern was the costs to participate in most derbies. For people that have to ship their birds, the cost of entry and shipping costs start to get out of hand, so our derby is placed as stated, giving many more opportunities to win.

If you want to see what your birds can do on a very challenging course, then we hope you consider entering our derby.

Plenty of camping space on site as well as hotels close by. Our Pig Roast has been kindly donated by Moby Meats and Hing Jang and of course thanks to our two great facilitators in Doug Chadwick and Wally Petrovic as they prepare to receive your entries.

May 22nd
We will start accepting birds on Saturday May 31st to allow for two complete weekends to try and assist people getting their entries to us.
May 30th
Our loft is ready and we are looking forward to receiving your birds. Please make sure that monies accompany the birds to the loft. The club would like to thank you all for your support. We are optimistic that our 2008 Derby will be a great success. Good Luck to everyone, and we'll continue to update this page with news as we have it.
June 20th
Birds are all out flying already. We are watching closely for any hawk or raptor problems. Early flights are all positive. The youngsters will be wormed and vaccinated shortly usual medications ongoing with multi vitamins. Looking good.
June 23rd
While worming the count was 77, so we have had 4 disappearances thus far. Birds are let out everyday and are kitting up already. A few hawk attacks but nothing drastic yet. Will do a complete inventory in a week or so to keep everyone notified and up to date.
July 4th
We are starting to train, first toss today. The YB's are let out to loft fly everyday, despite the falcon threat, as we have to get them down the road to be ready. As a consequence we have suffered some losses. The birds appear to be predator smart now and are exercising well when loft flown. We took an inventory prior to the first training toss and the following birds are MIA.
CAL 830, CAL 152, CAL 1927, MIRPS 473, MIRPS 469, MIRPS 1192, MP 1402, VIC 344, VIC 60, MIRPS 372, MIRPS 369, MIRPS 371, NR 3390, CU 8782.
A total of 14 birds. We are sorry for the losses to date and realize that this is disappointing for those affected. As before, we will continue to monitor for returns and will keep you posted. We are both hoping that this is the worst news we will have to relay for this years Derby.
July 25th
We have posted the inventory and all birds have their electronic bands as of today. We are down to 36 birds remaining and have had some difficult training tosses initially but the latest releases have seen excellent returns. One bird returning late today MIRPS 170 will not be shipped to our 1st race from Mt. Washington scheduled for July 26th. We will post the results on this site Sunday July 27th and wish everyone good luck.
July 26th - Race 1
We shipped 35 birds to Race 1 Mt.Washington July 26th was the intended race point but our driver advised that he was bringing back the birds to a shorter release due to suspect weather. The birds were released at 8.00am weather was overcast and heavy rain showers were a factor throughout mid island after the race birds were liberated on Saturday. We had a drop of 4 birds clocked at 8.58am then had to wait another 2 hrs before a larger drop of 22 birds clocked at approx 11.00am. We had another 2 at approx 2.00pm and a further 2 late evening. We checked the loft early today Sunday and there were no new arrivals. Returns to date 30/35 shipped.
Congratulations to Mike Tomshak our 1st Race Winner with Cal 1929.
July 29th
MIRPS 663 ret'd Sunday morning and MIRPS 1504 on Monday afternoon.
July 30th
The birds will be trained from Parksville today. Also we have had entry MIRPS 466 not shipped to Race 1 reported dead.
Points Clarification
All birds that are shipped to the races and clocked in race time are now eligible for points. We are paying out to eight places in the Six Race Total Points. If there are not eight birds that clock in every race then the others would come into play. However, we have to stipulate that the birds that clock every race will get preference regardless of total points. In other words if a bird that misses clocking one week has more points than a bird that clocked every week it will be behind that bird in overall standings. This rule is to reward the most consistent birds. The Calcutta race on the day of the Derby is wide open for that day only. As we initially shipped 35 entries to Race 1 all of the other races will also award 35 pts to the race winner. We hope this clarifies the payout of the first 8 positions. 1st - 28%, 2nd - 21%, 3rd - 15%, 4th - 12%, 5th - 9%, 6th - 6%, 7th - 5%, 8th - 4%.
August 1st
The training toss from Parksville mid week was extremely difficult despite our Derby birds being released with other trainers. We shipped 33 and had 19 return on the day in good time but no further returns. We continue to hope that some of the birds will work back.
August 2nd - Race 2
We shipped 19 birds to Mt.Washington today and released the birds for our 2nd Race in the series at 7.40am in sunny and clear conditions. We regret to inform everyone that there were no day birds. The race will continue into the 2nd day and will close at 9.00pm on Sunday August 3rd.

Final race in this series Campbell River scheduled for Saturday August 30th.
August 29th
Due to the small number of pigeons that survived our barrage of raptor attacks, and whatever else is going on in the pigeon world, we have decided to cancel our Derby day. Our committee found it difficult to justify the expense, time, and travel to maintain the loft with only five birds remaining. So after the last race this weekend we will pay out the first eight positions as advertised. That is the first eight positions in the Total Points will receive one thru eight.
Hopefully we can get our webmaster to create a page on our website where the remaining birds can be auctioned. This will be open for 7 days to allow anyone interested to bid on the birds. The highest bidder can then take the bird and I am sure arrangements can be made to get the bird to you.
If there is no interest in an auction online then the club will sell the remaining birds to any interested parties when we get together.
September 2nd
We had our final race from Campbell River on Saturday August 30th. It turned out to be a fast race to conclude the series with the birds liberated at 7.30am and clocked at 9.20am.
1st MIRPS 939 2nd MIRPS 1194 3rd MIRPS 467 and 4th MP 2620. One of our MIA birds MIRPS 750 ret'd with the race birds.
Congratulations to Auke Elzinga our 6th Race Winner with MIRPS 939
September 3rd
Just a final update on the birds in the loft as of today. There are 7 birds remaining MIRPS 939 MIRPS 1194 MIRPS 467 MP 2620 VIC 216 (injured but now loft flying) and late arrivals MP 168 and MIRPS 750.
We will retain the birds until our Annual Show and they will be auctioned at that time as will any further returns.
The club sincerely appreciates your participation and support and we thank you for your understanding of a difficult pigeon flying environment.
