It is designed with a special switch in the lid that is tripped when the lid is fastened in place so it will not work without the lid on. It also has to be connected properly onto the base. This new blender has an ergonomic blender handle which makes it easy to hold and since it is made of high impact thermo plastic polycarbonate, it is very durable and can withstand high temperatures such as boiling hot soups. The lid also has a much wider hole and funnel to allow the addition of large ice cubes and the blender blades are all metal with a wide blender gasget for easy removal and cleaning.The All-New changes are:  - The lid has a larger funnel
- There is a safety switch built into the lid. When you remove the lid while the motor is running, it will shut off.
- The lid locks on by twisting
