Rose Care Tips Monday, October 26, 2009
If you receive roses and the heads start to fall over, do not discard them...follow these easy steps to fix them. First off the reason this happens is when the rose was last cut a bubble of oxygen formed in the bottom of the stem. This bubble then travelled up the stem and is lodged beneath the head of the rose leaving the rose unable to feed itself. To remove this bubble of air simply run warm water in a bathtub of sink large enough to accomodate the rose lying down. Add flower nutrient to this water. Re-cut the rose under water and weight the rose in a horizontal position in the water. Leave immersed for at least 4 hours or until the rose is firm once again. If you need to re-cut your roses at any time, always do so underwater to prevent this problem. Keep roses, well watered with flower nutrient as they are very hungry and thirsty. Also do not place them in any sources of heat such as sunlight or near TV's, heater or furnace vents.

Autumn's Bounty Monday, October 26, 2009

The fall colors are at their height, but fading quickly. We will soon be moving into the winter season and preparing for Christmas. But in the meantime we can enjoy the brisk chill in the air and watch the leaves swirling around us as the wind plays in the trees. I walked my Miniature Schnauzer Tiberias this morning and found that we were walking through piles of leaves that have accumulated on neighborhood sidewalks. Hearing them crunch and rustle at my feet reminded me of childhood days walking to school, how I dallied to stir up those great piles that seemed so high to me then.

During this season, we can really appreciate nature's bounty by harvesting all the fruits, vegetables and flowers from our gardens. Look around you and consider extending those fading summer blossoms by bringing in the last bloom or two from the garden. Pick up fresh fallen leaves and scatter them on your table to enjoy the color. Hydrangea's have dried out and it is a perfect time to pick them before the wet weather begins the rotting process. You can use your plant and shrub prunings as greenery to add to those last summer blooms and create lovely arrangements for your home. If your budget allows select some bright fall colored fresh flowers from your florist to add. Not having to pay for greenery makes this very cost effective and just a few flowers will go a long way.
